The artificial dam that bridges the narrows of Lake Lugano between Melide and Bissone in the Swiss canton of Ticino is known as the Melide dam (Ponte di Melide or Ponte Diga).The dam was built in 1848 according to plans by Pasquale Lucchini and is of national importance. Here the main road 2, the national road A2 and the Gotthard railway cross Lake Lugano. The dam forms the direct inner-Swiss connection between the two cities of Lugano and Chiasso.
