Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia in the central Balkans and has historically been under Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule. Built in the 15th century, the stone arch bridge connects the Ottoman-era Old Bazaar on the north bank of the Vardar with the modern main square to the south. Overlooking the river, Kale Fortress served to defend the city for centuries.
